Nigeria: PDP Governors Forum Holds Inaugural Meeting

The newly formed Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum, headed by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, will hold its inaugural meeting on Monday at the Akwa Ibom Governor's lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.

A source said the meeting will likely address the seeming animosity among some of the governors who are not comfortable with the formation of a forum parallel to the already existing Nigeria Governors Forum.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors Forum's Chairman, Mr. Akpabio, is expected to appeal to his colleagues to allow peace reign in the party, and will use the formation of the All Progressives Congress and the coming together of opposition governors as signs that the PDP must get its house in order.

Another source in the PDP told PREMIUM TIMES that the leadership of the forum may also try to adopt a consensus candidate for the election in May of a new chairman for the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF.

"The presidency is trying its best to ensure that Amaechi (Rivers State Governor) does not get a second term, so I will not be surprised if the governors adopt a consensus candidate today, who is acceptable to all," he said.

Mr. Amaechi's tenure as NGF Chairman ends in April although he is eligible to contest for a re-election.

It s believed that the PDP National leadership established the party's governors forum to whittle down the influence of Mr. Amaechi, who is believed to be opposed to any re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.
