Liberia: Nomination Starts for Bassa By-Election

The National Elections Commission (NEC) commences nomination of candidates today, Monday for the Grand Bassa County Senatorial By-Election. A release issued in Monrovia on Friday, March 8, 2013 quotes NEC Public Information and Outreach Director Joey T. Kennedy as saying, in line with the key dates of the Senatorial By-Election in Grand Bassa County, the nomination exercise will end on 26 March.

The Commission has therefore, encouraged interested candidates and political parties desirous of contesting the election to take due note of the designated period for candidates nomination. The electoral governing body has urged candidates to collect, process, and submit nomination packages within the stipulated period.

NEC was officially notified of the existence of a vacancy in the Senate on February 18, 2013, following the death of Grand Bassa County Senator John Francis Whitfield on 17 February 2013.

The commission however emphasized that in line with its policy on decentralization, all electoral events intended for the Grand Bassa County Senatorial By-Election will be held in the county.
