Danish shipping company Maersk Line will reroute its vessels from Panama Canal to Suez Canal starting mid-April, Bloomberg news agency reported on Tuesday.
Maersk Line, the world's biggest shipping company, will stop using Panama Canal from Asia to the east coast of the United States which only fits 4,500 vessels and will switch to Suez Canal which fits than 9,000 vessels.
Although the new route is five percent longer in distance for the company, Maersk Line believes that Egypt's strategic waterway will be less costly than its counterpart in Panama especially after Panama Canal raised fees for passage by more than 300 percent during the past 5 years.
Suez Canal's revenues during December 2012 reached 424 million and 600 thousand dollars after 1399 vessels had passed through the channel with cargo weighing around 76 million and 989 thousand tons.
