A recent survey has revealed that there are presently 24,376 female commercial sex workers, 1,234 male homosexuals and 195 intravenous drug users in the federal capital territory.

Dr. Uche Okoro, Project Manager, FCT Agency for Control of HIV/AIDS (FACA), revealed this when a World Bank team yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Secretary FCT Health Secretariat in his office.

He said the figures are a result of a recent survey of Most At Risk Population (MART) conducted by the FCT Administration and funded by the World Bank.

In his remarks, FCT Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat, Dr. Ademola Onakomaiya said the FCTA is determined to provide health care services based on quality, equity and sustainability.

He solicited for more financial and technical assistance from the World Bank because, according to him, the FCTA cannot do it alone, adding that there is commitment to zero tolerance for HIV/AIDS, which is being treated free in government hospitals in the territory.

World Bank Director, Human Development, Ritva Reinika, in her comments, said one of the ways of providing assistance is the engagement of civil society organizations, who are close to HIV/AIDS risk groups.
