Tanzania: Moshi Police Seize 208kg Khat in Crackdown

Moshi — POLICE in Moshi District have impounded 208kg of khat and 120 litres of illicit brew popularly known as "gongo," in a crackdown on criminal activities in the area, the Regional Police Commander, Mr Robert Boaz, has revealed.

He said that police officers on patrol recovered a consignment of khat, which a suspect had abandoned after unloading it from a motorcycle he was riding, yesterday morning, at Chekereni Village in the lower Moshi area.

On the same day, at 8 p.m. two suspects who were each carrying 60 litres of "gongo" on their motorcycles, with registration numbers T506 AYA and T943 BGM, also disappeared after spotting police officers on patrol along Mwika Road in Moshi rural area.

Police have launched a man-hunt for the suspects and are in the process of identifying the owners of the motorcycles involved in carrying the seized "gongo."
