Zimbabwe: Polls Close in Zimbabwe Referendum

General elections are slated for July.

Voting came to an end in Zimbabwe in a referendum that is expected to endorse a new constitution that would reduce President Robert Mugabe's powers and clear the decks for elections later in the year.

About six million eligible voters had been expected to cast their ballots on Saturday at 9,456 polling stations and as at 5pm, Zhombe had recorded a total of 9, 769 votes cast while Gokwe, as of now, has seen 16, 000 votes being cast.

The new constitution would curb the presidential powers that Mugabe has enjoyed during his 33-year rule and lay the groundwork for elections due in July that would end an often acrimonious power-sharing deal between Mugabe and Tsvangirai.
