Somalia: Somali Prime Minister Vows Protection of Independent Media

The National Union of Somali Journalists called the conviction of Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim,“a serious setback” for press freedom (file photo).

Abdi Farah Shirdon Said, the Prime Minister of Somalia told that his government would safeguard the independence of the local media in Somalia.

Speaking to journalists in the capital, Prime Minister Shirdon also called on the local media that they should be professional and work in the line of the ethics of the media and journalism.

Mr. Shirdon said that as Somalia is returning to normalcy and peace, the local media should prioritize how to pacify the country and lead harmony within the Somali people.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister commended the constructive role the local media has been playing during the different hard times of the country.

This positive gesture of the Prime Minister came days after some journalists including few working for Shabelle Media Network have been subjected to threats, detention and beatings. In the latest development a cameraman of Shabelle was beaten at the Benadir regional court.
