South Africa: Cosatu Nw Supports Sadtu On Recalling Mec

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the NW support the call of SADTU to recall the MEC of education who has been arrogant since her appointment and she has brought the department into disrepute. It has failed the people, the learners and our own democratic priorities for prioritising education.

We call on the ANC and our provincial government to take steps to defend the plight of our children who still want to build their future using our education system.

As the federation we tried; we did all we could do, including approaching the premier to intervene on the matter of the attitude of the MEC but it did not help.

It is our view that the MEC must be released from her duty as the MEC of education and be given other responsibilities by the ANC government but not in education.

Since she took over the standard of education in the NW has been reduced. Corruption has gone up and the results have gone down in all grades.

We have pleaded with the MEC to respect the trade unions and all staff in the dept, but it has not helped. We are now in the position of saying she must go.

We also support the decision of the ANC to remove the MEC of local government who is currently facing criminal charges for the murder of the late regional secretary of the ANC of Dr KK.

We fully support that and we are sure that it sends a clear message to some of those who are holding political office or political power that no one is above the law. Crime remains crime; there can be no political intervention on a murder. If anybody has killed he or she must face the law.
