Excitement for the start of the 2013 soccer season is running high amongst the junior teams of the Metropolitan local football district. Since the middle of last year there has been a huge increase in youth participation. Many of the officials approached for a comment on this sudden surge, are dumb- strucked with this renewed eagerness and zest. Though a few do admit it could be down to a better run organisation mainly to a new management in office.Cape Flats News spoke to a few club administrators whilst the teams were busy with their pre-season practices.
Ms. Alida Hendricks, Everton Spurs under 7 and 9 manager, said, "because of the success of last year, many boys have joined, as they found football an ideal escape from the rigors of gangsterism. I want to appeal to parents, to send their children even if they don't have money. The club will make a plan to help, though parents in return are implored to come and help on match days."
Sharing similar sentiments were Sharief Williams, Sporting United under 13 and 15 manager. "Young people in this age group are extremely vulnerable to the social ills in the community, and this club tries to offer incentives, like playing in lucrative tournaments. At the moment the under 15's are playing a special Manchester United event and have qualify for the next round after completion of the round robin phase. Training is held every Tuesday and Thursday at the main sport grounds".
After spending a year in the Northerns football district, Southend Football United has come back their roots. Too much travelling couple with the lost to many players explained under 7 and 9 coach Nazier Solomons. He adds further, "far too many youngsters leave school early and don't know the pleasure of team sport. Here at Southend, we just don't teach them soccer but also instill basic life skills. The club is looking forward to renew rivalries with a few of the home based clubs."
As usual, not to be outdone, Golden Gate's chief director Mogamat Abrahams, is excited about his club's prospects this year. Following a disastrous season last year, when they lost several players which ultimately impacted on the field, the club has recruited a number of players from Bonteheuwel. "Our mission remains the same, keep the children of the streets, let them enjoy the game, and the rest will follow, "added a passionate Abrahams.
Goulburn Athletic and Bluegum United two of the oldest clubs at Metropolitan is also looking forward to the new season. Both clubs have been pleasantly surprised by the number of new players. They believe this fresh enthusiasm comes from the competitive leagues and the accomplishments and successes of their football mates, and it's a challenge they thrive on.
