Tunisia: 'Our Goal Is to Lift Two Million Tunisians Out of Poverty in Next Five Years' - President

Carthage — The country should set as its goal "to lift two million Tunisians out of poverty in the next five years," which requires "a new approach that breaks off with the old development model and providing all the conditions for the economy to be in service of the society," President Moncef Marzouki said on Friday.

He pointed out at the opening of the Colloquium on Citizenship, organised by the Presidency of the Republic on the sidelines of the World Social Forum (WSF), that the individual and collective liberties "have no value if they are not placed at the service of economic and social rights."

Besides, the President of the Republic said that all eyes are on Tunisia which is considered as "a laboratory where an experience never tried before is being carried out," pointing out "his refusal to divide the Tunisian society into laic modernists on one hand, and Islamists on the other.

He emphasised that Tunisia will never waive renounce democracy which in spite of some clumsiness at the level of practice, is still better than any form of dictatorship.
