Egypt: Al Azhar Calls Islamic Scholars to Support Activities of Eradicating Polio

Al Azhar has called all Islamic scholars, local societies and health organizations to support activities aimed at eradicating polio, stressing the necessity of vaccinating children against polio and all other diseases that can be eliminated through vaccination.

In a statement he issued on 29/3/2013 on the occasion of the World Health Organization's Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr. Ahmed Tayeb urged all parents and local societies to ensure that children are getting access to polio vaccination that is administered to them through the anti-polio campaigns.

Tayeb strongly condemned the violence that is being practiced against vaccine workers. He expressed his gratitude to the health workers, officials, and religious scholars for their sincere and durable efforts for the sake of a polio-free world.

He noted that protecting children in the Islamic world against this disease is the responsibility of all, adding that power and future of the Islamic nation hinge upon protecting its children against all diseases and guarantying their full rights.
