Somalia: Somali Court Convicts Al-Shabaab Member of Killing Journalist

A Somali military court on Thursday (March 28th) convicted an alleged al-Shabaab member of killing a journalist in Mogadishu last year, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) announced.

The court found Adan Sheikh Abdi Sheikh Hussein guilty of murdering journalist Hassan Yusuf Absuge of independent Radio Maanta, who was killed September 21st shortly after working on a report about a suicide attack.

"We hail this verdict, which is indeed a justice served for our colleague Hassan Yusuf Absuge and his family," said NUSOJ official Omar Faruk Osman. "We hope that justice will be similarly [served] for colleagues who were murdered by criminals who are not afraid of the rule of law."

The targeting and killing of Somali journalists have intensified recently, with three journalists killed this year.

Eighteen journalists were killed in Somalia last year by bombs and gunmen. Press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders called 2012 the "deadliest year" on record for Somali journalists.
