In his welcoming statement, Mr. Yahya Matarr Jobe, the acting Secretary General of NATCOM, said it was in 2001 when ISESCO started a pilot project in the Gambia to introduce the use of standardized Quranic script with a training session involving teachers and education specialists. He said it was in 2005, when five literacy centres were opened among Wollof speaking communities and that teaching and learning materials as well as A3 typewriters were provided to these centres. He said some 3O Gambian Arabic/Islamic teachers were trained in the use of the typewriters and each was given a machine to train other students. The acting NATCOM SG said the pilot project was aimed at fighting illiteracy and marginalisation within the Muslim Ummah in enhancing Islamic Culture as well as contributing towards achieving the Education for All (EFA) goals.
