Nigeria: Bureau De Change Robbery - Lagos Police Arrest Seven Suspects

The Police in Lagos said on Tuesday that they had arrested seven armed robbery suspects who raided some Bureau-de-Change at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, and killed two officers.

Mr Umar Manko, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, made this known while parading the suspects at the Police Headquarters, Ikeja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the suspects were said to have invaded some Bureau-de-Change at the Airport on March 13, 2013, at about 7.30 p.m., carting away unspecified amounts of foreign currencies and killing two police officers.

Manko explained that after the incident, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) under the command, took over investigation of the case.

"We have arrested seven suspected armed robbers, who participated in the robbery operation at the airport in Lagos on the 13th of March.

"So far, we have been able to recover six AK-47, four dynamites, two locally made pistols, 1,920 rounds of ammunition, 64 AK-47 rifle magazines and charms.

"In 2012, the same gang attacked same place and carted away about N600 million. The suspects involved in this operation are not resident in Lagos.

"They live in Osun, Ogun and Oyo states. They only come to Lagos to carry out crime, " Manko said.

He said that one of the suspects, (names withheld), who claimed to be a pastor and herbalist, had admitted that he used to pray and prepare charms for the suspects at Odogbolu area in Ogun State.

He said that the suspect confirmed that he had received N900,000 from the two operations.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Abubakar, has awarded 17 officers attached to the SARS of the command with 'Certificate of Courage'.

Manko, who presented the certificates to the officers on behalf of the IGP, said that Abubakar was pleased with the performance of the officers in combating violent crimes in Lagos State.

"We are here to share 'Certificate of Courage' signed by the IGP to men of SARS for their efforts in fighting crime in Lagos State.

"This award is the second in the series which the IGP uses to appreciate officers for a job well done".

"The same men arrested the suspected armed robbers, who attacked the bureau-de-change at the airport.

"The I-G said that those who work hard will publicly be rewarded and those who do wrong will also be publicly punished.

"This certificate is I-G's appreciation to the men for fighting crime in Lagos. The force recognises their efforts also".

"The Lagos State Police Command also commends these men for their effort," Manko said.

The commissioner commended Gov Babatunde Fashola, for providing logistics to security agencies, adding that he had also rewarded men of SARS for their "brilliant" performance.

NAN reports that one of the officers recognised was the Officer in Charge of SARS, Mr Abba Kyiari (SP). (NAN)
