Zambia: Looming Hunger Prompts Minister to Calm Citizens

Deputy minister in the Office of the Vice President Harry Kalaba has urged people not to panic on the anticipated hunger situation in the country this year.

Kalaba said government will soon conduct an assessment of the possible hunger situation and find ways of addressing any problems. He said government will ensure that no one dies from hunger.

Ever since the PF government came into power, they have grossly mismanaged the agriculture sector that has resulted in shortage of mealie meal, late delivery of the agriculture inputs among others.

Despite inheriting a bumper harvest from the MMD government, the PF has failed to harness the sector and has instead inflicted stressful conditions in people's living standards.

MMD vice-president for administration Brian Chituwo has since advised government to conduct a comprehensive crop survey in order to plan for the year.

Dr Chituwo said the food situation is a source of worry under the PF government and that many people that depend on farming will be affected by hunger this year.
