Kenya: Farmers to Plant Without Fertiliser

Some farmers from Trans Nzoia county have resolved to planting maize without fertiliser after missing out on the government's subsidy. The Agriculture ministry supplied the area with only 2,600 bags of fertiliser of 50kg each which was not enough.

The subsidized fertiliser sells at sh.2480 but private stockists are selling it at between Sh.3,700 and Sh.4,000. Agricultural experts say the county will lose more than 40 percent of the yields realised every year if farmers plant maize without fertiliser.
