Egyptian Activists Rally in Solidarity With Train Staff

Tens of activists organized a demonstration by the Journalists Syndicate on Wednesday in solidarity with train staff who began a strike on Sunday.

Revolutionary Socialists, the Social Democratic Party and other parties and movements took part in the stand along with a number of prominent political activists, including Mona Mina and Nawara Negm.

The protesters chanted in support of the workers and against capitalist policies.

"We support all those fighting for their rights and all demands of justice and we reject negligence and corruption and the using of old methods to terrify the striking workers, such as referring a group of them to prosecution or summoning army recruits to take their place," Kareema Hefnawy, secretary general of the Social Democratic Party, told the state news agency.

A driver said that the workers demanded in their strike the maintenance of facilities and better conditions among other demands that were all turned down.

He added that the strike ended yesterday upon the transport minister's decision to restructure the workers' wages.
