HIV/AIDS infections continue to be a significant cause of death in many developing countries, including Ghana. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that some 33 million people are living with the disease.
According to recent figures released by the Ghana Aids Commission, the prevalence rate range is at 1.5 per cent, indicating a 1.2% decline from 2.7 per cent in 2005. The commission further estimated that about 12,077 new infections occurred in 2011, out of which 1,707 were children.
