Somalia: Three Police Killed, Inmates Escape in Somaliland Prison Attack

Clan militia members attacked a prison in Ainabo on Tuesday (April 16th), freeing dozens of inmates and sparking a gun battle that left at least three police officers dead, Somalia's RBC Radio reported.

Police were able to arrest 26 of the attackers, said Somaliland Interior Minister Mohamed Arale Dur. "The jail break is related to land disputes between two rival clans and there were growing complaints recently," he said.

Several clan leaders in Somaliland have recently warned that government-led oil drilling campaigns without the consultations of the locals might lead to inter-clan fighting.
