Gambia: Benedict Jammeh's Case - Indictment Finally Files

State prosecutors have finally filed a bill of indictment at the High Court in Banjul, charging Mr. Benedict Jammeh former NDEA Director and Mr Abdoulie Ceesay, former Public Relations Officer of economic crimes. On Tuesday 23 April, the presiding judge, Justice Mikailu Abdullah, threatened that if the state did not file the indictment against the two accused persons by Thursday,25 April, he would discharge them.

However, on Thursday, the prosecution told the court that they had finally filed the indictment. Hence the case was adjourned to Tuesday,30th April for further hearing. Mr. Jammeh and Abdoulie Ceesay, were arraigned before the subordinate court in Banjul presided over by Magistrate Dawda Jallow on the 12 March,2013 jointly charged with Economic Crime (Specified Offences) Act contrary to section 5 (f) of the economic crime Act, Laws of The Gambia,2009. Both accused persons denied the charge preferred against them. The matter was transferred to the High Court on the ground that the lower court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the matter. Prior to the admission to bail, Mr. Jammeh nearly spend one month and 4 days in detention at the State Central Prison, Mile II.
