Angola: WHO Recognizes Government's Efforts to Combat Malaria

Mbanza Kongo — The representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Angola, Hernando Agudelo, acknowledged Thursday in the town of Sumpi, municipality of Mbanza Kongo, northern Zaire province, efforts by the Angolan Executive in combating malaria.

"We have followed with great satisfaction the efforts of the government of Angola to the elimination of this disease in the country, as well as the National Plan to Combat Malaria which has contributed significantly to reducing the incidence of the disease here in Angola," he expressed.

Speaking at the main event of the World Day to Combat Malaria, Hernando Agudelo assured that despite these efforts of the Executive, there will be built more health units throughout the country, especially in peri-urban and rural areas, as well as improve the environmental sanitation.

"Therefore, WHO, UNICEF and UNDP are supporting the government of Angola to ensure this year, universal coverage of insecticide-treated mosquito-nets through the free distribution of five million nets to families as well as the treatment of malaria at Community level and the training of social mobilizers to promote essential knowledge and prevention and treatment of this disease, "he emphasized.
