Scores of suspects were arrested in Mombasa's Kisauni area on Sunday (April 28th) after a gang attacked Frere Town police station, injuring a police officer and stealing his gun, Kenya's The Standard reported.

Police said the gang had posed as people in need of help at the station before they struck at 1 am on Sunday.

"We do not know who is behind the attack and efforts to get the weapon are ongoing," said Coast police boss Aggrey Adoli. "The injured officer was rushed to hospital where he is admitted in a stable condition."

The secessionist Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) has been blamed for similar attacks in the region, although it has not always taken credit. Last month, three suspected MRC members were charged with the murders of four police officers in Changamwe.
