It's more than three weeks since Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) closed down Nakivubo stadium over nonpayment of Shs 388 in taxes over a period of several years. Though there has been some progress through talks to reopen it, one needs to go back in history to clearly understand the cause of the current impasse.
Nakivubo stadium was opened in 1926 but it was not until 1953 when it was incorporated by an act of Parliament that it became fully functional with a board. Purposely designed for football as the main sporting discipline, it also accommodated athletics, boxing, weightlifting, netball and even motocross.
