Zimbabwe: Voters' Roll, Electoral Typology

column

So mobile voter registration is now open, or is supposed to, as from April 29. It is unfortunate that Zimbabwe now has to rush through such critical election processes which must have been in place ever since the formation of the inclusive government in 2009.

The incessant delays caused by lack of financial resources as well as what I observed to be lack of political will were central in the delays in the voter registration process. Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai announced in December 2012 that voter registration would commence on January 3, 2013. It has however, taken about four months to kick-start the process. Given the rush to elections that has gripped the political parties, I am left to wonder just how much of an effective job will come out of voter registration? I am asking a lot of questions around the loopholes in this last-minute gasp to get by and move to elections? Could these delays have been intentional to merely ensure the process becomes chaotic and incomprehensive?
