Uganda Lose Out in Cricket Final

Uganda 151/8 (50.0 overs)

Nepal 153/5 (39.2 overs)

Nepal won by 5 wickets

** Arinaitwe named Man-of-series

Ugandan cricketers faltered when it mattered most yesterday as they let the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 slip away in the final. Nepal are champions after a five-wicket victory.

It was a false start for Uganda's batsmen soon after winning the toss, with only Lawrence Sematimba (27), Deusdedit Muhumuza (28) and skipper Davis Arinaitwe (23) saving the team from a humiliating score.

Nepal then cruised to a sweet win with 64 balls to spare. Attempts by left arm spinner Henry Senyondo (2-29) to slow down Nepal were not enough on a spacious pitch.

Nepal's triumph in the tournament in Bermuda was all the more remarkable after they lost their opening two round robin matches against Uganda and USA.

Uganda skipper Arinaitwe said his team has much to be proud of having booked a ticket to next year's ICC Cricket World Cup qualifying tournament in New Zealand.

Arinaitwe was also named player of the tournament having received man of the match accolades on two occasions. The Uganda team wins a bonus of sh38m from the Uganda Cricket Association for their qualifiction, missing out on sh51m had they won the final.

"Qualifying for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier was our primary objective when we got here, we first put our sights on trying to qualify for that tournament, so I felt that for us, that is an achievement that we can take back home," he said.

"Ideally, I would have liked to finish the tournament on a high and pick up the final trophy of the whole tournament, and leave this beautiful island as WCL winners. But on this day I thought we were not lucky in the field. I thought the Nepal batsmen batted pretty well."

Uganda will now switch its focus to the two upcoming global qualification events: "I think we'll get back home, take a short break, then resume the training as usual as we try to prepare for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in November and then the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier as well."

Oman and Italy were relegated to the WCL Division 4, Nepal and Uganda were promoted to WCL Division 2 while USA and Bermuda remain in WCL Division 3.

Nepal and Uganda now advance to the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which will be held in New Zealand in eight month's time. The two sides will compete with eight other leading Associate and Affiliate sides for the final two positions in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
