Zimbabwe: Miner Dies After Falling Into Disused Mineshaft

Chinhoyi Bureau — An unregistered Chegutu small-scale miner died and seven others were injured when the ground they were sleeping on suddenly gave in and they fell into a disused mineshaft. Washington Chambwa (age not given), who was seated around a fire at Giant Mine in Chegutu together with seven other miners, died on the spot when the ground subsided at around 3am on Monday.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident adding that the injured were taken to Chegutu district hospital. "A man died and seven others were injured in Chegutu when the unregistered miners were sleeping around a fire when the ground suddenly collapsed and they landed in a disused mineshaft that was underneath," he said.
