South Africa: Tjakastad Municipality Must Build Bridge Across Nkomazi River

press release

The IFP urges the municipality of Tjakastad in Mpumalanga to urgently construct a walk-bridge across Nkomazi River in Tjakastad for residents.

IFP Spokesperson on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith MP, said, "Residents of Tjakastad especially pensioners have been putting their lives at risk for years now, by crossing the river that has no bridge but only stones used as the passage to cross the river. The municipality of Tjakastad must build a bridge across Nkomazi River immediately. Residents have been requesting this for years, but to no avail.

This is yet another example of complete failure by local government."

Smith added, "Government and its councillors must make the safety of our people a priority. How many people must drown before this bridge is built?"

The IFP will closely monitor this issue and trust that the bridge will be constructed as a matter of urgency.
