AfDB Builds Capacity in Education Through Education Research Awards

Under the co-sponsorship of the African Development Institute (ADI) of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC), the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) announced the winners and presented eight awards to African scholars and research institutions that have published distinctive research in the field of education. The award ceremony was held on Tuesday May 14, 2013.

During the ceremony, the main speakers were, Professor Mazrui through televised videoconferencing from Binghamton University; Professor Martial Dembélé from the University of Montréal in Canada, and Professor Dia Kamgnia from the African Development Institute of the African Development Bank.

The announced winners were:

For the Emerging Educational Researcher, the winners were Mr. Ibrahim Kasirye of the Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC), Uganda and Ms. Nana Adowaa Boateng, Collaborative Africa Budget Reform Initiative Secretariat (CABRI), South Africa.

For the category of Accomplished Educational Researcher category, the winners were Mr. Adesoji Adeolu Oni, from the Department of Educational foundations, University of Lagos, Nigeria and Mr. Abdoulaye Diagne, from the Consortium pour la Recherche Economique et Sociale (CRES) of Senegal.

Mr. Michael Cross of the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Mr. Pius Augustine Ike (PAI) Obanya, an independent educationist, and researcher and education activists from Nigeria were named winners of the Outstanding Mentor of Educational Researchers.

Two educational research institutions received the Enabling Institutional Environment for Educational Research awards: the Educational Research Network for West and Central Africa (ERNWACA/ROCARE) based in Bamako, Mali, and the Wits School of Education, based at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

This award, known as the Education Research in Africa Award (ERAA), has been managed by the ADI and the ADEA, with initial support from Education Without Borders (EWB, South Korea), an affiliate of the Seoul National University (SNU) of South Korea.

Another major component of the Award is the opportunity for further training for the laureates, in the forms of: Scholarships and opportunities for post-doctoral studies. More specifically, Winners of the different categories are offered a study Tour in Korea. ADI and ADEA will work closely to that end, as well as to institutionalize the ERAA, through closely working with Korean authorities regarding Follow-up of the next ERAA 2012/2013.
