In one of the public events that followed the hearing of the report of the African Union's Peace and Security Commission, the African Union gave the Kwameh Nkrumah Scientific Award to two prominent African scientists .
Chairperson of the African Union, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn gave the $ 100,000 award to Professor Nabil A. Ibrahim in the Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation Category, and to Professor Michael John Wingfield in the Earth and Life Sciences Category. Professor Michael John Wingfield is a Director of the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute FABI, University of Pretoria South Africa.
The second award was to Egyptian Professor Nabil A. Ibrahim, a Professor of Textile Chemistry and Technology, National Research Center, Textile Research Center of Egypt. The African Union (AU) Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Awards program is one of the several bold steps taken by the AU Commission to boost and popularise Science and Technology in Africa through empowering African scientists, celebrating their achievements and promoting all efforts to transform scientific research into economic growth.
