Kenya: Mung'aro Lashes Out At CIC Over MPs Pay

KILIFI North MP Gideon Mng'aro has called on the Executive to respect the Legislature. He said the Legislature should be allowed to perform its duties without the interference of another arm of the government.

Mng'aro called on the Commission on the implementation of the Constitution to keep off the debate between MP and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

Speaking at Kiwandani in Kilifi on Thursday during a visit, Mng'aro said Parliament has the power to fire the SRC chair without consultating CIC or the Executive.

"We feel that the SRC is pressing us too much and does not want to engage us (to) reach a meaningful consensus. As MPs we determine the fate of Sarah Serem and can fire her any time," he said.

He said it is unfair for the SRC to cut MPs salaries and increase theirs. "When we gave Serem the job, she used to earn Sh300,000 now she earns Sh1.5million. She should stop moving to the Executive to have her way. Let her respect the separation of powers between the three arms of the government," Mng'aro said.
