Tanzania: Japan Courts Support for Olympics Bid

Yokohama — JAPANESE Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday pleaded for African nations to support the world's third largest economy's bid to host the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Opening the fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD -V) here, Abe said Tokyo Olympics was once the stage through which Africa was exposed to the world.

He said it was through the Tokyo hosted Olympic Games in 1964, during which Ethiopian athletic Abebe Bikila won two Olympic marathons in succession, that the world was enlightened about Africa's power.

Abe associated the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 - now the African Union (AU) - and the Tokyo Olympics, saying even northern Rhodesia won her independence and became Zambia the same day the Olympics were closed
