Somalia: The UN Security Council Meets On Somalia

The United Nations Security Council discussed Somalia on Thursday (June 6th), hearing from Deputy UN Secretary-General, Jan Eliasson, the UK's Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds , Somalia's Deputy Prime Minister, Fouzia Yusuf Haji Adan, and Dr. Tekeda Alemu, Ethiopia's Permanent Representative, speaking for IGAD.

In a subsequent Presidential statement the Security Council noted recent progress but underlined that gains in security 'remain fragile'. The Council welcomed the launching of the new United Nations Assistance Mission to Somalia (UNSOM) on June 3rd and reiterated support for the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr Nicholas Kay. It said it expected UNSOM to become an integrated mission by the beginning of next year.
