Nigeria: Why Baby Factories Boom in South-East

analysis

Enugu/Awka/Oweri/Umuahia — The illegal business of 'producing and selling babies' for quick money in the southeast is not only flourishing but beating the dragnets of security operatives in such areas.

The genesis of reported cases of baby factory, seen in some circles as 'dirty business' in Enugu State began over ten years ago. In those days, one infamous medical doctor used to engage in the act. Several times he was apprehended by the police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and paraded in Enugu before journalists only for him to wriggle out and bounce back. Dr. Akunne continued like that until some years back when he was prosecuted and eventually jailed for his 'baby factory' deal. Recently, he was reported dead after some undisclosed sicknesses and buried about last week. But it seems those Akunne must have 'trained' in the illegal and dirty business have continued from where their 'master' stopped, hence it might take long before the business could be reduced or eradicated by the authorities in the state.
