Angola: U.S. State Department Hears Angolan Civil Society

The acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Donald Yamamoto, received today, at the State Department in Washington, the Angolan journalist and human rights defender Rafael Marques de Morais.

During the meeting Mr. Marques de Morais addressed the consequences of rampant corruption in Angola and how it threatens social and political stability in the country. The occasion also served to address the human rights situation in the Lundas diamond region in the northeast of Angola.

Also present at the meeting were the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Shannon Smith, and the Deputy Director for Southern Africa Affairs, Madeline Seidenstricker.
