BOOK CAFÉ is where it will be happening today with two of Zimbabwe's talented mbira queens facing off in a discussion dubbed "The Mbira Journey with Stella Chiweshe and Chiwoniso Maraire" chaired by Hope Masike.
The focal point will be the significant contribution the two musicians have made in developing and promoting mbira music. It will be worthwhile to know more about the mbira instrument from Ambuya Stella as she is known by her legion of fans.
Both Chiwoniso and Ambuya Stella belong to the third generation of female mbira players who have significantly made a great impact to the lives of people around the globe.
The two will lead the discussion, which was organised by ethnomusicologist Hector Rufaro Mugani and musicologist Extra-Blessings Kuchera.
It is one of a series of mbira development-related programmes which began in 2012.
The much-hyped discussion is likely to lure all respected and experienced professionals with a good knowledge of mbira.
Many people have misconceptions about the emergence of female mbira players and diminishing their importance the process.
In the past women were denied the opportunity to play mbira even if they had the zeal to play the traditional instrument which was mostly played by men. Today women play the mbira on local, regional and international platforms where they showcase their talent.
Chiweshe is an example of a few who broke the barriers and inspired other women to play mbira.
Her input in this regard is worth mentioning since it took a lot of courage to overcome these hurdles.
Chiwoniso is one of the undisputed icons in the genre who has done well in taking mbira music to the world with Masike still proving to be the force to reckon with.
Chiwoniso has been very innovative and experimental with mbira music, adapting several music genres with it.
Said Kuchera: "We are very excited to have Mbuya Stella Chiweshe speaking on this platform as one of the most respected mbira players in the world."
Mugani called for everyone's support to rally such great strides being made by women.
