Africa: Achieving Press Freedom - Self-Censorship Hampering the Media

According to the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX), a global network of organizations defending and promoting freedom of expression, the last decade has witnessed a rapid increase in the adoption of Freedom of Information (FOI) laws throughout Africa. While only one law was passed in 2000, in 2013 the number was to eleven. But implementation of the laws remains very challenging.

Freedom of Information law allows for the full or partial disclosure of information and documents controlled by government and institutions.
