Angolan journalist and human rights defender Rafael Marques de Morais will discuss today the latest political developments in Angola and the country's engagement in regional military issues at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in Washington, D.C.
For the past five years, Angola has allocated up to US $40 billion in defence and security appropriations, half of which was directed to the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA). Currently, Angola has the highest military spending in Sub-Saharan Africa, and it ranks third in the continent, behind Egypt and Algeria.
Mr. Marques de Morais' presentation is part of the CSIS Africa Program's Angola Working Group series, which explores economic, social, and political dynamics within the country in order to better understand Angola's domestic and foreign policy priorities. CSIS is a bipartisan, nonprofit organization focused on policy research and analysis.
