South Africa: Fawu Would Welcome Probe Into Poultry Industry

The Food and Allied Workers' Union would welcome a formal inquiry into the state of competition in the poultry industry or market inquiry as announced by the Competition Commission on Friday, 28 June 2013.

FAWU will particularly appreciate the outcome of the study on the impact of employment in the import value and processing chain in the local poultry industry as we still believe that stricter import tariffs on poultry imports from Brazil and the European Union (EU) is needed to protect some 40 000 jobs in the sector and the union has asked for government intervention to this effect. FAWU remains firm in its belief that the benefits of retention of jobs and ensuring growth in the industry outweighs slight increases in chicken prices as argued by AMIE who opposes tariff hikes.
