The Kenyan government received 1.5 billion shillings ($17.5 million) Monday (July 1st) from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Kenya's Capital FM reported.

With this new donation, 51 billion shillings ($594 million) has so far been spent on Kenyan initiatives fighting the spread of these diseases, especially HIV/AIDS.

"Kenya has been receiving money from donors such as the Global Fund, but due to bad governance, the money does not get to the intended persons," National Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich said. "We are now glad that we have a functioning government that requires an audit of the funds."

"We are impressed by the work that Kenya has done in the use of funds previously," said Global Fund Executive Director Mark Dybul. "However, there remains a lot to be done when it comes to combating tuberculosis especially in patients that are suffering from HIV/AIDS."

The government will also establish a trust fund devoted specifically to HIV/AIDS prevention and the treatment of tuberculosis and malaria, Deputy President William Ruto said, according to Kenya's Daily Nation.
