Kenya: Champions Tusker Seek to Build a Strong Fan Base

Kenya Premier league champions, Tusker have rolled out an ambitious plan to march their arch-rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards by establishing a firm fan base for the club. The ten-time league champions, who have gone to toe-to toe with the two football giants in terms of winning trophies, initiated the plan in a meeting attended by club chairman, James Musyoki, team director Charles Obiny, KBL marketing manager Anthony Esyalai and several representatives of their fan bases.

"A big team like Tusker which has enjoyed immense success over the years should have a strong fan base because everyone likes to be associated with success. It's up to us to ensure our fans come out and support the team in public," said Musyoki. While admitting that the club's support have sometimes been shy to publicly voicing their support for the club, interim chairman of the Tusker Supporters Group, Wycliffe Omondi, said that was about to change. "We need to create some element of vibrancy among our core supporters so that others can come out proudly and seek to be recognised as supporters of Tusker," he remarked.
