Djibouti's Secretariat for State and National Solidarity (SESN) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have launched an initiative to distribute coupons for food to 6,500 vulnerable families, the Djiboutian Information Agency reported Tuesday (July 2nd).
Families in Boulaos and Balbala will be able to exchange the coupons for staple foods such as pasta, lentils, rice, flour and sugar valued at up to 7,550 francs ($42) per week for three months. This programme is expected to help curb food insecurity and improve the nutritional status of children and women.
The National Union of Djiboutian Women and the Peace and Milk Association have been asked to help distribute the coupons to the families.
Recipient families were identified after the SESN, the WFP and Djibouti's Department of Statistics and Demographic Studies surveyed 17,000 households door-to-door to identify the most vulnerable, using non-monetary indicators.
