South Africa: Num to Strike At De Beers

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will today begin a strike action at all De Beers operations of Voorspoed in the Free State, Kimberly Mine in Kimberly, Diamond Trading Company in Kimberly and Venetia near Musina.

The strike comes after De Beers had failed to accede to NUM's wage demands even when the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) had intervened. The failed intervention by the CCMA had led to the NUM receiving a certificate of non-resolution to the dispute and having to embark on a strike action to force the company to accede to the workers ‘legitimate demands.
