Tanzanian Police Arrest British Terror Suspect

Police in Tanzania have arrested a British citizen on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities in the UK, Tanzania's The Guardian reported Saturday (July 6th).

Hassan Ali Iqbal was arrested in the Kyele district of the Mbeya region as he tried to cross into Malawi.

"We have been in contact with our counterparts in the UK and they have confirmed that the suspect is wanted in their country for involvement in terrorism activities," Director of Criminal Investigations Robert Manumba said in a statement, according to Kenya's The Standard.

Iqbal possessed two passports with different names. Manumba said that while Iqbal's British passport was valid, his Tanzanian passport, under the name Adil Ally Patel, was stolen from the Immigration Department last year.

The British Foreign Office confirmed the arrest and said they were providing consular assistance.

Manumba said an unidentified Tanzanian has since been arrested on suspicion of aiding the terrorist activities of Iqbal.
