Tanzania: FFU Use Tear Gas to Disperse 'Machingas'

THE Field Force Unit had to use force to calm down a face -off between petty traders and Kinondoni Municipal askaris following an afternoon dispute between the two at Dar es Salaam's Manzese area.

The district askaris had earlier in the mid morning asked petty traders, also known as Machingas to leave an expansive area that they had left days earlier in order to give way to the ongoing construction of Morogoro road.

But the Machingas returned on Saturday morning, protesting and returning their commodities along the road side , forcing the district askaris to force them off the area again.

Eyewitnesses said this ensued into a dispute that saw Machingas cause trouble by closing the road and imposing their presence in the area, subsequently occasioning disorder at the area known as Manzese bridge.

Eye witnesses told 'Sunday News' that as the drama ensued at 2pm, FFU had to be called in to redeem the situation that could have potentially gone out of hand as more ordinary people joined in.
