Liberia: Hats Off to the Gov't of Norway

On Thursday, July 4, 2013, the Government of Norway gave a grant of US$72.6M to the Government of Liberia (GoL) for the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee Hydro in White Plain.

It can be recalled that early this year, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in her annual address promised the People of Liberia that the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee Hydro will be completed in December of 2015.

Ceremony marking the signing of the US$72.6M grant was held at the Finance Ministry in Monrovia.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Government of Norway through its Counselor here, Fred Ramussen, described the grant by his government as a big boost towards the rehabilitation process of the Mount Coffee Hydro.

The Norwegian diplomat said the amount was given to the GoL because his Government was pleased with ongoing rehabilitation works at the Mount Coffee Hydro.

For their part, Finance Minister AmaraKonneh and the Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy, Patrick Sendolo, who spoke at the signing ceremony, lauded the Norwegian Government and People for helping Liberia revive its energy sector.

They mentioned, Norway having contributed the highest amount towards the rehabilitation process of the Hydro, remains Liberia's key partner in the energy sector.

We join Ministers Konneh and Sendolo in also commending the Government of Norway for its continued contributions to the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee Hydro, which is considered as a national priority.

Indisputably, the rebuilding of Liberia following years of political brouhaha is heavily dependent on stable and affordable energy.

This is why the growing need for the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee Hydro cannot be overemphasized.

We encourage the Government of Norway to continue the goodwill to Liberia, particularly in the energy sector, which revitalization is so needed.

With the continued contributions of Norway, it is our ardent hope that Madam President's solemn pledge that the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee Hydro will be completed in December of 2015 would a dream come true.

Again, we say hats off to the Government of Norway.
