Major sponsor of the Nigerian national football teams, Globacom, has commended the performance of the home-based Super Eagles who defeated their Ivorian counterparts 4-1 in the CHAN 2014 first leg final round qualifier on Saturday in Kaduna.
Nigeria edged closer to the CHAN finals slated for South Africa next January after humbling fellow West Africans, Cote d'Ivoire.
However, it will not be over until the second leg is played in Abidjan on July 20th.
"We are impressed that the players plying their trade in the domestic league were able to demonstrate their superiority over the Ivorians which further confirmed that our strong commitment to the development of the Glo Premier League is a step in the right direction," Globacom said in statement in Lagos Monday. "The fact that the home- based Eagles also showed their proficiency in goal scoring to satisfy the yearnings of Nigerian football fans means a credible new beginning for football in the country at the highest level," the statement added.
Globacom stated that the players have shown with the convincing win over Cote d'Ivoire that they could achieve success, no matter the challenges, if they get the right motivation.
Globacom is the official telecommunications partner of the Nigeria Football Federation and the major sponsor of the Nigerian national teams.
Similarly, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye commended the Eagles for the victory.
The NSC boss who was a special guest for the match used the medium to also commend Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero for showing profound love and interest for the game of football, a reason why he offered to host the match in the first place.
Elegbeleye also showered encomiums on the Kaduna fans who supported the Eagles all through the match.
He said this kind of attitude will go a long way in helping the psychology of the national team where ever they play. "I am happy that Kaduna is back to host matches of this magnitude. I am using this medium to thank His Excellency, Governor of Kaduna for his huge interest in football and for hosting the game which Nigeria won to put smiles on the faces of football loving Nigerians.
"The fans have been wonderful as regards their support for the team throughout the game.
"It was a great match and a good result for the Super Eagles. What they need to do now is to go to Cote d'Ivoire for the return leg and defend this result. I am confident they can do this and make Nigeria proud," Elegbeleye assured.
