The Black Satellites of Ghana came from behind twice to defeat Chile 4-3 in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Istanbul, yesterday, after they had taken an early lead in the first half in a match that travelled to extra time.
Midfielder Moses Odjer got the match opener in the 11th minute after he beautifully controlled the ball on the chest in the 18-yard box and hammered it home to register Ghana's first of the night from Frank Achampong's cross from the left side.
Nicholas Castillo cancelled the lead for the Chileans in the 22nd minute and took the lead four minutes later through Angelo Henriquez to finish the first half 2-1 in favour of the Chileans.
Back from recess, striker Ebenezer Asifuah leveled for Ghana in the 72nd minute to finish two-all at the end of the 90 minutes.
In the 98th minute, Henriquez got his second of the night and the third for the Chileans with a glancing header that left Antwi motionless again. In a breathtaking one-two passing superb team work, with play maker Clifford Aboagye in the thick of affairs again, the Chilean defence was split open and Salifu tapped in a goal from close range. Dario Melo had been beaten again to make it three-all.
The game looked destined to be decided on a shoot-out but Striker Ebenezer Asifuah stood high and connected a cross which could easily have been cleared by the Chilean defence; but, somehow, the ball bounced off the two Chilean defence and slipped through into the yawning net for one of the greatest come backs in world football.
The Satellites will now be seeking revenge against their arch-enemy, France, in the semi-final stage of
the competition.
The French forced a 3-1 defeat down the throats of the Ghanaians in the opening game of the tournament.
