Liberia: Small Town Residents Fear CDC 'Sabu Unit', But...

Residents living behind the Headquarters of the Congress for Democratic Change-CDC in Sinkor are said to be living in fear from what they call gruesome attacks on them by men believed to be posted at the headquarters as security personnel.

According to a cross section of residents yesterday, some men living in the compound of the CDC Party headquarters in the early hours of the morning attacked them, destroyed valuable properties and even wounded some of the residents in the process.

The residents, mainly youths complained that the residents had experienced some men who are criminals attacking peaceful residents who use the route in front of the CDC party to get to their residences since the route is the shortest sometimes are attacked by these men and lose valuables and even been harmed in the process.

A young lady who pleaded for anonymity said these men are sometimes armed with cutlasses and desperate weapons which they use to attack people. "You can go and ask anyone in Small Town; we are living in fear; our lives are not safe. " No one ventures to use the CDC party side of the road, or risk losing everything," the young lady stated.

Another Sam Brown said," We are tired of these attacks; almost every time people steal from us and don't want to work and find something to do. Look at other unskilled Liberians; they are contracted by MCC and other companies in the country, while these guys can't go there and find something to do," Sam also stated.

But according to the ring leader of the group in Small Town, who is also believed to be the Community Chairman, the leaders and officials of the CDC need to take responsibility of all the damages done against the members of Small Town.

According to a man called James who is believed to be the Community Chairman, if nothing is done to curtail the situation, they will also retaliate.

James said it is true that the men at the party headquarters are criminals who harass peaceful residents on a daily basis for sometimes now with nothing being done by their leaders to put a stop to the criminal activities in the area.

The hierarchy of the Congress for Democratic Change CDC has clearly stated the party's position on the recent alleged attack on its party's Headquarters on the Tubman Boulevard in Sinkor.

Some officials of the CDC complained that their Party Headquarters have been attacked and vandalized by some Unity Party partisans living in Small Town.

According to Mulbah Morlu of the Congress for Democratic Progress yesterday at his party's headquarters, the recent attacks should be condemned by all Liberians in irrespective of party affiliation, religious alignment and political differences.

Speaking further on the attacks, Mr. Morlu said about 15 to 30 young men armed men from Small Town, a little community situated right behind the CDC party's headquarters grouped themselves on Friday night and attacked the CDC party's headquarters, affecting several damages on the properties of the building.

Mr. Morlu said that the youths burnt down several structures including two palava huts. They broke in from the back of the Party headquarter building and broke three offices of the building and even wounded some of the partisans living in the compound.

Speaking further, Mr. Morlu said, due to the urgent nature of the incident, the party immediately contacted the Liberia National Police for assistance, but said, unfortunately, the Police failed to act immediately but just deployed a handful of police officers at the front of the Party headquarters while watching the Small Town Youths intensified their attack.
