Liberia: Ellen Re-Appoints Mary Broh

Barley one month after the Liberian Senate showed concern and debated about the City of Monrovia and its environs being swallowed by mountain of garbage stockpiles, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has re-nominated former Acting Mayor Mary T. Broh as City Mayor designate of Monrovia pending confirmation of the Senate.

Nimba County Senator Thomas Gupee recently told the Senate plenary that the sanitation situation in Monrovia was becoming deplorable since the resignation of Mary Broh from the Monrovia City Corporation.

It may be recalled that Mary Broh was compelled to tender her resignation under pressure from the 53rd Legislature in late February 2013, but her resignation had remained a topic in various street corners with many persons in the public continuing to debate and lament as she is one of the strongest civil servants when it comes to performance in the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration.

Over the years, she proved herself to be one of the most reliable lieutenants of the Sirleaf's administration with extra vigor to get the job done well.

Broh was also declared a non-governmental material by the House of Representative when she obstructed legislative function at the Monrovia Prison Center in February 3013, something which led to her forceful resignation.

It is not yet clear as regards the action to be taken by the Senate Committee on Internal Affairs during the confirmation hearing, but sources at the Capitol building confided in the INQUIRER that Madam Broh may likely be successful on grounds that she is innovative and bringing sanitation to Monrovia and its environs.

There has been no reaction from members of the Senate yet relating to the re-nomination of Madam Broh but political observers are anticipating a huge debate on this matter beginning this week.

However, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has also appointed Rebecca Benson, Mayor City of Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Esther Worgley, City Mayor of Gbarnga, Miatta Tarnue, City Mayor of Bopolu, Julia Bono, City Mayor of Buchanan and James Kiazolu, City Mayor of Robertsport.

Others nominated by the President include; Retha W. Kai, City Mayor of Zwedru, Christopher N. Dormu, City Mayor of Barclayville, Youngor Stephens, City Mayor of Voinjama and Eddie Z. Murphy, City Mayor of Kakata.

The Liberian leader also appointed Regina Sampson, City Mayor of Harper, Mary N. Gonlapia, City Mayor of Sanniquellie, Sarah Zeo, City Mayor of Cestos City, Martha Jarbo, City Mayor of Fish Town and Barbara Keah, City Mayor of Greenville.
