THE Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers yesterday formally signed a Sh16.2 billion deal with government. Education Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi described the deal by Kuppet as "selfless" and "for the sake of the children of Kenya". "I am very excited and happy with this deal because it is going to benefit every teacher. A teacher is a teacher," Kaimenyi said.
He asked Knut to respect the court ruling and enter talks with the government. TSC secretary Gabriel Lengoiboni said the talks consolidated all the demands presented by Knut and Kuppet. He said disciplinary measures will be taken against teachers who abscond duty.
"County directors have a roll call in their respective areas," Lengoiboni said. The TSC secretary threatened to advertise vacancies of teachers who boycott classes.
Kuppet has 47,000 members. There are 11,000 secondary teachers under Knut while Kuppet has about 900 members from primary schools. The lowest paid teacher in Job Group G with Sh1,000 commuter allowance now moves to Sh4,000 while that for the highest paid teacher, chief principal in Job Group R goes up to Sh16,000 from Sh4,410.
